Twin Knobs Recreation Area

Leaving Louisville was the first time that we honestly didn’t know where we would go next.  We have to be back in South Carolina with Austin’s family for Thanksgiving, but we are completely free from now until then.  We talked to several people (and did a lot of googling) and decided that we would head to Daniel Boone National Forest.  Boy, we are glad we did!  Twin Knobs only has walkup sites this time of year (late October) so we go there as soon as we could and were happy to secure an awesome site. The leaves were starting to change, and the views of the lake were awesome!

Our awesome site for the week

Twin Knobs is not only beautiful, it has a great trail system also. There is about about a 20 mile mountain bike loop that can be ridden straight from the campsite, and Austin rode it twice. We also did a hike up one of the knobs to an observation area. The hike was a little anticlimactic though because the views on the way up were probably better than the ones at the top.

Saturday turned out to be kind of a perfect day as Austin rode the mountain bike loop in the morning, and then we fired up the smoker in the afternoon to smoke ribs and chicken while we watched football. The only downside to this park was the cell signal wasn’t great, but we were still able to stream games with Austin’s phone.

Lovely lakeside trail

The campground was right on a lake with several different loops.  We lucked out and got the only electric site in the loop we were in so we felt like we had the campground to ourselves.  There was also an awesome lakeside trail that connects all of the loops.  I enjoyed walking on that while Austin rode his bike.  We also finally had our first campfire at this campground! Austin wouldn’t let us have a fire until it was in the 50’s.  It was cool enough in the evenings so we had campfires every night!

Our first campfire of the trip!

We enjoyed this campground so much that we almost extended our stay.  However, we were using up our Verizon data pretty quickly since the Sprint hotspot wouldn’t work there so we decided to move on.  If you are ever in the area, Twin Knobs should definitely be on your list!
